A headed goal by Accrington's hot shot Paul Mullin condemned the Stags to an away defeat at Accrington Stanley

The Stags' fourth straight loss means only Wrexham are now below Billy Dearden's team.

The match never threatened to become a classic but it was Stanley that were once again indebted to striker Paul Mullin.

The 33-year-old netted 16 times last term in Accrington's battle to beat the drop and he now has four for this season including his 26th-minute winner.

In a game of few clear-cut opportunities his latest effort was always going to be crucial.

Mullin continued to pose problems for the visitors though keeper Carl Muggleton wasn't particularly busy.

It did not help Mansfield that they had to re-shuffle early in the first half due to Martin McIntosh's injury; Daniel Martin coming on to replace him after just 17 minutes.

However, Kenny Arthur enjoyed one of his quietest afternoons of the season as the Stags failed to score in the league for the first time this term.

It was poor entertainment though for a crowd of just over 1,400. But Stanley's missing hundreds may start to return if they maintain their improved form.

Top referee Alan Wiley officiated in this game and should have allowed the match to flow.

Instead, the Staffordshire whistler awarded over 30 free-kicks which only added to the disjointed nature of the contest.

Northern Ireland international Sean Webb made his debut for the home side that now face another crunch match next weekend at Lancashire neighbours Bury.

Mansfield also face a vital game in their next outing when they entertain Dagenham & Redbridge at Field Mill.
